Apple’s iPhone Duo Unfolds a New Era: Everything Announced at Today’s Apple Event

Apple used today’s “Surprise and Shine” event to make one of its biggest iPhone bets in years. The headline announcement was the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable phone, presented alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, AirPods 5, Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4.

The 77-minute presentation also marked a changing of the guard. New CEO John Ternus led the event after taking over from Tim Cook earlier this month, framing the iPhone as an “intelligent personal hub” built around private, context-aware AI.

iPhone Duo is Apple’s $1,999 foldable

The iPhone Duo opens to reveal a 7.6-inch inner display, which Apple says is 80% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro’s screen. A 5.4-inch outer display handles more conventional phone tasks when the device is closed, while the expanded canvas can run apps side by side and supports Apple Pencil. Touch ID is built into the side button rather than using Face ID.

Inside, the Duo uses Apple’s new A20 Pro chip and C2 cellular modem. Apple says its dual-battery design delivers all-day use, while the titanium frame, Ceramic Shield protection and IP68 rating are meant to answer the durability questions that follow every foldable launch. It will come in Star White and Night Sky, with storage ranging from 256GB to 2TB.

The price is just as ambitious as the hardware: iPhone Duo starts at $1,999. Preorders open October 16, and sales begin October 23. That makes this an early-adopter device, but it also gives Apple a genuine new flagship category rather than another variation on the familiar slab phone.

iPhone 18 Pro focuses on cameras, battery life and AI

The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are more conventional upgrades, though their changes are substantial. Both use the 2-nanometer A20 Pro processor and a redesigned vapor chamber for better sustained performance. Apple rates video playback at up to 36 hours on the Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max.

The major camera upgrade is a 48-megapixel main sensor with variable aperture, giving photographers more control over light and depth of field. New Pro Controls add manual aperture, shutter-speed and white-balance adjustments, while smart focus tracking uses on-device AI to stay locked on a moving subject. Apple also introduced Reference Image, a system designed to verify that a picture was captured on the phone and preserve an authenticated version in Photos.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299, each with 256GB of storage. Preorders open September 12, with availability on September 18.

AirPods and Apple Watch get smarter

AirPods 5 bring active noise cancellation to Apple’s open-ear design for $129, along with improved sound, Live Translation and hands-free access to the upgraded Siri. A $149 version adds on-stem volume controls, longer battery life and a wireless charging case. Both versions are available September 18.

Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 introduce a new S11 chip and Health Sensing System. Apple says the watches can sample heart rate every five seconds, while a new readiness score combines recent activity, vitals and sleep to suggest whether users should push harder or recover. Audio Intelligence features arriving later this year will recognize important sounds and help users recall parts of recent conversations without retaining raw audio.

Series 12 starts at $399 and Ultra 4 at $799. Both can be preordered now and arrive September 18.

The Digital Den take

The annual Pro refresh delivers the expected gains, but the iPhone Duo changes the shape of Apple’s lineup—and potentially the wider foldable market. Samsung, Google and Motorola have spent years developing the category; Apple is entering late, at a premium price, with the advantage of a vast developer ecosystem and unusually tight hardware-software integration.

The other through-line was AI. Apple positioned Siri, health guidance, audio awareness and camera intelligence as features woven through devices rather than a separate chatbot. The demos were promising, but some server-powered features will carry daily usage limits, and Apple says expanded access will eventually cost extra. That detail—and how well third-party apps adapt to the Duo’s screen—will matter once the new devices reach customers.
