Part 3: The Singer Needed a Band

By Ed CoyeSeptember 15, 2026

With Mason Vane in place, the project widened. What band would this singer front? We explored names that could carry the same classic-rock scale as the music without sounding like a joke about a fictional band.

Midnight Line rose out of that process. For a while “The Midnight Line” was part of the discussion, but the shorter “Midnight Line” presented more cleanly. It looked stronger on artwork and sounded more like the name of a band than the title of a story.

Generating is easy. Choosing is the work.

AI can produce dozens of plausible names in seconds. That doesn't mean any of them deserves to survive. The useful part of the process was comparing them against the identity that was beginning to form: Mason Vane, “Lights Out West,” arena rock, mystery and a band that should feel discovered rather than manufactured.

The choice also started suggesting a larger story. A line can be a road, a boundary, a connection or something disappearing into the distance. We didn't have to lock down one explanation. The name left room for the band to grow.

The lesson

Use AI for abundance, then switch roles. Once you have enough options, stop asking for more and become the editor. The creative decision is often the thing you keep, not the hundred things the AI generated.

Try it yourself

Ask an AI for a batch of names, then don't ask it which one is “best.” Pick three yourself and explain why each almost works. Give that critique back to the AI and use it to refine the direction.

Next time: a fictional band starts acquiring a past.
